

Universities in ArizonaArizona is unique in its educational offerings. Arizona is home to three state universities, Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and University of Arizona. Accompanying Arizona's educational landscape are a series of private and for profit institutions as well as diverse tribal institutions that cater to the needs of Arizona's indigenous population. A brief history Arizona's university system is governed by the Arizona Board of Regents. As far back as 1885 the Arizona Board of Regents existed to conduct the affairs of education within the State. In 1945 the Governor signed into law legislation that united the governing boards of the university and state colleges and granted them authority under the Arizona Board of Regents. Currently the Arizona Board of Regents is comprised of eight volunteers appointed to staggered eight-year terms. Sitting on the Board are two students that serve two-year appointments. The Arizona Board of Regents provides oversight to the three State degree-granting universities. Public Universities Arizona hosts three different public universities, Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and University of Arizona. Arizona State University academic programs are found spread across the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. Described as one university in many places Arizona State University offers distinctive campuses with distinct academic offerings. Arizona State University offers a variety of undergraduate programs including communication and the ASU-Mayo Medical School. Other programs include business, law, and engineering programs allowing students to achieve their undergraduate or continue on to achieve their graduate degree. These programs are divided into 16 colleges spread across the four main campuses. Northern Arizona University is located in Flagstaff Arizona. Enrolling over 26,000 students were enrolled with over 18,000 at the Flagstaff campus alone. Similar to Arizona State University, Northern University is spread throughout the Flagstaff area. Northern Arizona offers more than 100 degree or certificate programs. The University of Arizona is located in Tuscon and has nearly 40,000 students enrolled and includes one of three medical schools. The University of Arizona is the only MD granting medical school in Arizona. Tuition costs Yearly tuition to the university system of Arizona is approximately $10,000 a year not including other fees or supplies. For out of state students the fees increase accordingly. It is advised prospective students meet with a financial counselor to discuss financial arrangements and answer critical financial questions.
